Retro Ottawa Comic Jam (circa 2000)

Excitement! That is what I felt earlier this week, when, thanks to Jammer Keith Savage and the lovely Meg McCallum, I received into my possession a giant folder containing amazing artwork from the original Ottawa Comic Jam (circa 2000!)

I'm really looking fwd to getting a chance to scan the bulk of this artwork and posting it on an adjacent page that will be linked to the blog. There are some crazy gems in there for sure; including multi-jam pages by Dave Cooper, Marc Bell and Amy Lockhart! It's hilarious, I was talking with Clayton, and although we both have artwork in the packet, neither of us remembered drawing some of those panels (mind you, it's been 12 years!)

In any case, it has been a rare treat to see these hitherto, unknown pieces of work. It'll be a thrill to scan and post them as I have time.

That being said, if there are folks out there who were a part of the Original Ottawa Comic Jam (circa 2000) please fwd me your info and I'll do my best to update the links page to acknowledge your work. Thankfully much of the artwork has info on the back so I didn't have to do too much sleuthing to track down the artists (esp Nick Cross, Troy Little, José Pou and Mike Valiquette to name a few!) But there are a few mysteries yet to solve. Hopefully it'll all become clear in the end. In any case, I'll leave you with this wee teaser of things to come!

Cheers,
Suzanne.

Happy Number Three!

Hello True Believers! Thanks to everyone who made the 3rd Anniversary of the Ottawa Comic Jam a rousing success. Looking forward to another year of crazy stories, silliness, creativity and the freedom to draw whatever you want in a supportive and cool atmosphere.

Thanks to the Shanghai Restaurant, Don, Ed and everyone else at Ottawa's oldest Chinese restaurant for continuing to make us feel welcome. China Doll even sent us a great drawing this time 'round to help celebrate our special day!

Over the last three years, we have been blessed with artists and writers, watchers and the curious, reporters, students, journalists; all manner of folk who come together and make each Jam unique and unforgettable. The 3rd Anniversary was exceptional in that we had a visitor from as far as Georgia join us! Thanks for taking time from your trip and stopping by to share your talent!

To mark the special occasion, we usually have a draw (May 30th was no exception!) Andrew Stutt was the lucky winner of a very cool Marvel Wolverine bust! Everyone else who took the time to join us received a variety of comics from the Kanata Wizard's Tower's vault. The comics were an assortment of vintage Image comics, stuff from SLG, Kitchen Sink, DC, Marvel and First! We tried to find '1st edition' copies for the cool factor, and Jammers were presented with a bag from which they drew the mysterious bounty. The fan fave (which Westin, Clayton and I have been chuckling over for a week) was the DC gem  HITMAN #5 "Enter Nightfist... He Will Hit You With His Fist!"

Clayton Jacobs draws the Jammers' names from the 'special hat' provided for the occasion.

The Happy Winner shows his prize!

Liz Walsh presents her MacGyveresque elastic-band quick fix (and inspires a comic to boot!)

Thanks to the following artists and writers who participated:  Suzanne Marsden, Clayton Jacobs, Scott MacLellan, Andrew Stutt, Liz Walsh, James Rule, Erin English, Gérard Bélec, Dwight Williams, Jessica Mitchell, Cédric Gauthier, Jesse Kaunisvuta, Keith Savage, Susan Shore, Meghan, Amy VanTorre, Janet Hetherington, Jodan Drossier, Sylvia Martin, Julia Tiller, Tim Moerman and Westin Church.

And now, on to the JAM itself!
